Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan earned a silver medal in the women’s 100 meters hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday.

Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji claimed gold with a national record time of 12.24 seconds. The 23-year-old’s victory marked Switzerland’s first world title in the event.

Amusan’s Stellar Run

Amusan, the 2022 champion and world record holder, finished in 12.29 seconds. Her performance secured Nigeria’s 12th World Championships medal. The 28-year-old continues to excel on the global stage.

Other Notable Finishers

Grace Stark of the United States took bronze in 12.34 seconds. Her teammate Masai Russell placed fourth at 12.44 seconds, slowed by a 0.240-second reaction time, the field’s slowest.

Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska hit a season-best 12.49 seconds for fifth, just ahead of Bahamian Devynne Charlton, who matched her time. Jamaica’s 2023 champion Danielle Williams finished seventh at 12.53 seconds. Nadine Visser of the Netherlands came eighth in 12.56 seconds.

Semifinal to Final Journey

Amusan led her semifinal heat with a 12.36-second run, outpacing Visser and Skrzyszowska. Expectations were high for her to defend her title. Despite a strong start in the final, Kambundji’s late surge proved unbeatable.

Nigeria’s Athletics Pride

Amusan’s silver adds to her historic 2022 gold in Eugene, where she set the world record of 12.12 seconds. Her achievements continue to elevate Nigeria’s presence in global athletics.
