Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who competed in the Paris Olympics last month, is currently in the hospital after suffering severe burns covering over 75 percent of her body. Local media reports that Cheptegei was allegedly attacked by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, in a violent domestic incident.

The attack reportedly occurred in Kinyoro, Trans Nzoia County, Kenya, where Marangach, armed with petrol, allegedly entered their compound while Cheptegei and their children were at church. He is accused of pouring petrol on Cheptegei and setting her on fire. Unfortunately, he also caught fire in the process when he lit the matchstick.

Neighbors quickly intervened, managing to put out the flames and rushing both Cheptegei and Marangach to the hospital. Initially, they were taken to Kitale County Referral Hospital before being transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for further treatment due to the extent of their injuries.

Authorities have begun investigating the incident, and police at the scene recovered evidence including a petrol can and a burnt mobile phone, believed to belong to Cheptegei.

Cheptegei recently ran in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics, where she finished 44th. She has previously won a gold medal at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in 2022.

The attack has shocked many, and investigations into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing.

Rebecca Cheptegei’s tragic situation has deeply affected her supporters and the wider athletic community. She is recognized not only for her participation in the Paris Olympics but also for her achievements in other international events, including winning a gold medal at the 2021 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships.

The incident has sparked discussions on domestic violence, particularly within the context of athletes who often face tremendous pressure in their personal and professional lives. While details continue to emerge, authorities in Kenya have intensified investigations to determine the full circumstances behind the attack. Cheptegei’s recovery process will likely be long and challenging due to the extent of her injuries, and both she and her partner remain under medical care.

This heartbreaking event has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of athletes off the track, particularly in dealing with personal relationships. Support for Cheptegei and calls for justice continue to grow, with many hoping that her case will highlight the importance of addressing domestic violence.

Cheptegei, once celebrated for her resilience and endurance on the track, now faces a new and difficult challenge, but her determination and past achievements have given hope that she will fight through this tough period.
