Kenya to use advanced artillery to end Al Shabaab IED attacks

The government has pledged to put an end to the recurring attacks on its soldiers by the Al Shabaab militia, who frequently use Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in their assaults. Defense Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale announced that efforts are underway to upgrade the equipment used by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the police in a bid to combat the Al Shabaab threat, both within the country and in neighboring Somalia.

Speaking at a public meeting in Masalani town, Garissa County, after discussions with local elders and leaders, the CS emphasized that the government will no longer tolerate terrorist attacks anywhere in the nation. He revealed that the security forces would soon be equipped with advanced armoured personnel carriers capable of detecting IEDs in high-risk areas.

In the past two weeks, Al Shabaab attacks have claimed the lives of at least 22 officers in Garissa and Lamu counties.

Additionally, CS Duale noted that within the next three months, the government plans to acquire advanced military equipment to enhance the police and KDF’s ability to confront the militia. He reassured that the government would not be cowed by terrorist threats.

Just last week, a multi-agency team arrested a suspected Al Shabaab operative along the Garissa-Dadaab road, signaling ongoing efforts to curb terrorist activities. In a firm directive, the CS also called on all civil servants to remain at their posts or resign from their duties.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omolo, who accompanied the CS, echoed this sentiment, urging for greater cooperation between local communities and security personnel to tackle terrorism. He emphasized that the government’s responsibility is to protect all Kenyans and their property.

During the meeting, local elders expressed their commitment to working with the government to rid the county of terrorism, declaring that they would not be driven from their homes by these violent extremists targeting security personnel.
