In a landmark event for technological education in West Africa, Benin has officially opened the region’s first blockchain university today. The Blockchain University of West Africa (BUWA) aims to become a hub for training the next generation of tech professionals in blockchain technology, cryptocurrency, and decentralized finance (DeFi).
The university offers a range of courses and degree programs focused on blockchain development, smart contracts, and the fundamentals of cryptocurrencies. The institution is designed to cater to students from across the continent, with both in-person and online learning options available.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony, the university’s founder, Dr. Seyi Falade, emphasized the importance of blockchain education for Africa’s digital future. “Blockchain is revolutionizing industries globally, and West Africa must not be left behind. This university will equip students with the skills they need to lead innovations in finance, healthcare, governance, and beyond,” Falade said.
Benin’s Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, Marie Odile Attanasso, also spoke at the event, hailing the initiative as a pivotal step toward embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Africa. “This institution will not only foster innovation but also contribute to job creation and economic growth in the region,” Attanasso remarked.
The opening of BUWA comes at a time when blockchain technology is gaining increasing attention across West Africa, particularly in sectors like finance, logistics, and public governance. The university will provide training in both technical and practical aspects of blockchain, ensuring students are ready to apply their skills in real-world scenarios.
In addition to academic programs, BUWA will offer workshops and certifications for professionals looking to gain specific skills in blockchain and decentralized applications. The university is also partnering with leading blockchain organizations globally to ensure students receive up-to-date knowledge and hands-on experience.
The launch of BUWA is expected to attract interest from tech enthusiasts, investors, and educational institutions across West Africa. With the increasing demand for blockchain expertise, BUWA aims to play a key role in shaping the region’s digital future.
