Renewed fighting along the disputed border between Cambodia and Thailand has forced tens of thousands of residents to seek shelter. The clashes began when Thailand launched airstrikes. Consequently, Cambodian forces retaliated with rockets and drones. This sudden violence has shattered a ceasefire agreed upon earlier this year.
Both governments accuse the other of violating the agreement that had previously paused the conflict.
Civilian Exodus and Casualty Toll
The violence has triggered a massive humanitarian crisis. Residents are fleeing border villages on both sides:
- Thailand reports that over 50,000 people have sought shelter.
- Cambodia’s defense ministry confirmed that the clashes have driven more than 20,000 people from their homes in Cambodia alone.
The casualty count continues to rise. Cambodia has reported that seven civilians have been killed and twenty wounded. Thailand, meanwhile, has confirmed the deaths of three soldiers.
Civilians now living in Thai shelters described their ordeal. They spoke of constant fear, sleepless nights, and a painful sense of déjà-vu from previous conflicts in the region.
Blame and Military Action
Thai officials maintain that their airstrikes were launched in response to provocations from Cambodian units. They assert that their actions were limited and purely defensive.
In contrast, Cambodia states that its forces only fired back after Thailand initiated aggressive attacks into its territory. The Cambodian government insists its forces remain strictly within their national borders.
The escalation underscores the intense fragility of the relationship between the two nations. This highlights the difficulty in maintaining long-term peace in the contested border zone.
