Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has called for renewed efforts to strengthen democratic institutions across West Africa, warning that evolving political and security challenges require more resilient governance systems.
Jibrin made the call in Abuja while speaking as special guest of honour at the 2026 forum organised by Voice of Nigeria, themed “51 Years of Nigeria’s Role in Deepening Democratic Stability in ECOWAS.”
The event drew a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including policymakers, diplomats, media executives, military officers, and traditional leaders, all focused on the future of democracy in the subregion.
The lawmaker, who also serves as First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, acknowledged progress made in democratic governance but stressed that the journey remains far from complete.
“Recent developments across parts of our region remind us that democratic institutions must continually be strengthened to withstand emerging political and security challenges,” he said.
He emphasised the critical role of legislatures in sustaining democracy, noting that parliaments serve as pillars of accountability, transparency, and constitutional order.
Jibrin further reaffirmed the commitment of Nigeria’s National Assembly to legislative oversight, policy reforms, and initiatives that promote national development and regional cooperation.
Highlighting Nigeria’s leadership role within the Economic Community of West African States, he described it as both a privilege and a responsibility, urging the country to lead by example through strong institutions and adherence to democratic values.
“By strengthening our institutions at home and supporting democratic stability across the region, Nigeria will continue to serve as a pillar of stability and a driving force for regional cooperation in West Africa,” he added.
The Deputy Senate President also underscored the importance of credible media in safeguarding democracy, warning that misinformation poses a growing threat to public discourse.
“As we reflect on 51 years of Nigeria’s contributions to ECOWAS, we must recognise that strengthening democracy is an ongoing responsibility,” he said, calling for collective commitment to peace, inclusiveness, and regional solidarity.
