President John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to launch a full-scale investigation into allegations of corruption in the award of government-sponsored overseas scholarships.
The directive was announced by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, following claims that some scholarships were allegedly secured through monetary inducements.
The allegations were made by Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), during a radio panel discussion on Sompa FM, where he claimed that an individual paid money to obtain a scholarship to study abroad.
In a formal communication to the Director-General of the NIB, signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, the President described the claims as “serious and of grave public concern.”
According to Kwakye Ofosu, the directive reflects the government’s commitment to transparency, integrity, and equal access to educational opportunities, particularly in the administration of public scholarship schemes.
As part of its mandate, the NIB has been instructed to investigate the allegations thoroughly, establish the facts, identify any individuals involved, and determine the credibility of the claims.
The Bureau is also expected to submit recommendations to the President on any appropriate actions arising from the outcome of the investigation.
