Niger Republic Bars Nigerians with ECOWAS Passports Under New Immigration Policy

Niger Republic has implemented a new immigration policy that bars Nigerian travelers from entering the country using ECOWAS passports. The move, which tightens border regulations, comes amid strained relations between Niger and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following recent political developments in the region.

Reports indicate that Nigerian travelers attempting to enter Niger with ECOWAS passports have been turned back at border checkpoints. Authorities in Niger have not provided an official reason for the restriction, but sources suggest it is part of broader measures to assert national sovereignty and reduce external influence.

This development follows the diplomatic fallout between ECOWAS and Niger’s military-led government after sanctions were imposed on the country in response to the July 2023 coup. Although ECOWAS lifted some sanctions in early 2024, tensions have persisted, leading to policy shifts like the current travel restrictions.

The new immigration rule has raised concerns among traders and businesses that rely on cross-border movement between Nigeria and Niger. Many fear it could disrupt trade and economic activities, especially in northern Nigeria, where commercial ties with Niger are strong.

As of now, it remains unclear whether the ban is temporary or a long-term policy shift. Nigerian authorities have yet to issue an official response, but analysts warn that the restriction could further strain diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
