Edo tax collection crackdown

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has announced a suspension of all revenue collection activities across the state, citing the need to address irregularities and prevent extortion. The directive, issued on November 13, aims to streamline the state’s revenue collection process, improve transparency, and protect Edo residents from illegal levies. Okpebholo’s suspension affects various state revenue-generating entities, which have been instructed to halt their activities immediately.

Governor Okpebholo explained that the suspension seeks to curb harassment and fraudulent practices by unauthorized collectors. Reports of extortion and unauthorized fees imposed on residents and business owners had raised concerns across the state, with many citizens voicing frustration over the burden of these unlawful demands. In response, Okpebholo’s administration has prioritized reforming the revenue system to eliminate corruption and ensure only authorized officials engage in legitimate tax collection.

As part of the enforcement of this new directive, Governor Okpebholo has instructed law enforcement agencies to arrest any individual or group found collecting revenue without authorization. The governor emphasized that any attempt to bypass the suspension would be met with strict penalties. Law enforcement, particularly the police, has been mandated to monitor compliance and swiftly detain those who continue revenue collection activities against the government’s orders.

In the wake of this suspension, Okpebholo’s administration plans to develop a more organized revenue system that prioritizes fairness and transparency. The governor also expressed his commitment to implementing technology-driven solutions that reduce the risk of corruption and make revenue collection more efficient. While this decision temporarily halts state revenue collection, Okpebholo assures Edo residents that these measures aim to benefit the public in the long run by building a more trustworthy and accountable system.

Okpebholo’s decisive action signals a significant shift in Edo State’s approach to revenue generation, emphasizing the administration’s focus on fighting corruption and protecting citizens’ rights.
