Electricity Debt

Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) have emerged as the leading DisCos with the highest number of customer complaints in recent months, according to a report highlighting challenges in Nigeria’s power sector. The majority of these complaints are tied to billing issues, which have long plagued the electricity sector, frustrating consumers across the country.

In a separate development, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) revealed that Nigerians accumulated a staggering ₦349 billion in unpaid electricity bills over nine months. This debt poses a significant challenge to the financial health of DisCos, impacting their ability to improve infrastructure and services.

Consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with estimated billing systems, meter shortages, and perceived inefficiencies in service delivery. One consumer lamented, “We need transparency and fairness in billing. It’s frustrating paying for electricity we don’t even use consistently.”

The NERC has urged DisCos to address customer concerns promptly and implement strategies to reduce the growing debt. Meanwhile, experts are calling for greater investment in prepaid metering systems and improved customer engagement to foster trust and accountability.

As the electricity sector grapples with these issues, the call for reforms to ensure more efficient service delivery and reduce debt burdens remains loud and clear.
