Gas flaring

In a significant environmental achievement, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited and its partner, First Exploration and Production (First EP), have successfully reduced routine gas flaring by 96% in two oil fields located in Bayelsa State, Niger Delta. This breakthrough represents a major step in Nigeria’s efforts to reduce harmful emissions from the oil and gas sector and move towards cleaner energy practices.

The reduction in gas flaring is expected to have a profound impact on the environment, as gas flaring has long been a major contributor to air pollution in the Niger Delta. It is also a significant part of the broader effort by the Nigerian government and oil companies to meet international climate agreements and reduce the carbon footprint of the country’s oil industry.

This achievement was made possible by a combination of technological upgrades and operational adjustments at the affected oil fields. The partnership between NNPC Ltd and First EP has seen the installation of gas utilization infrastructure, which ensures that the natural gas that would have otherwise been flared is now captured and used for productive purposes.

Speaking on the achievement, a representative from NNPC Ltd highlighted that the reduction of gas flaring aligns with the corporation’s long-term strategy to transition towards more sustainable energy practices. The partnership with First EP has shown that it is possible to operate efficiently while minimizing environmental impact.

The reduction in gas flaring is expected to improve air quality in the region, which has long suffered from the environmental consequences of the oil industry. The environmental benefits of this move are significant, as it not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also mitigates the harmful effects of flaring, which has been linked to respiratory illnesses in the local population.

Furthermore, the reduction of gas flaring could lead to additional economic benefits. Captured gas can now be channeled into the national energy grid, helping to boost Nigeria’s power generation capabilities. This initiative also opens the door for the country to take advantage of its vast natural gas resources, which have often been underutilized in the past.

The Nigerian government has been actively pursuing a number of measures aimed at curbing gas flaring in the country, and this milestone achieved by NNPC Ltd and First EP marks a step forward in that direction. The government has set a target to completely eliminate routine gas flaring by 2030, and this progress is seen as a key part of that goal.

Experts have praised the efforts of NNPC Ltd and First EP for taking decisive action in reducing gas flaring, calling it a model for other oil companies to follow. There is growing pressure for the industry to align with international environmental standards, and this achievement provides a clear example of how such goals can be realized.

This milestone not only reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to cleaner energy but also signals a positive shift in the oil and gas sector towards greater environmental responsibility. As the country continues to face the challenges of balancing energy production with environmental protection, initiatives like these are crucial for building a sustainable future.
