President Bola Tinubu

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Ambrose Owuru, a former presidential candidate, seeking the removal of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office. The judgment, delivered on Monday, declared the case as “frivolous” and lacking merit.

Owuru, who contested the 2019 presidential election under the Hope Democratic Party (HDP), sought to nullify Tinubu’s election, alleging that he (Owuru) remained the rightful winner of the 2019 polls. He argued that President Tinubu’s continued stay in office was unconstitutional, claiming he had a mandate that was yet to be implemented.

Allegations Against Tinubu

The case also incorporated allegations related to Tinubu’s alleged drug connections and prior controversies involving the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Owuru demanded the president’s immediate removal and his own installation as the legitimate president of Nigeria.

In delivering its judgment, the Supreme Court stated that Owuru’s claims were baseless and legally untenable. The court criticized his reliance on outdated and irrelevant issues, pointing out that the 2019 election results had already been addressed by appropriate judicial authorities.

Court’s Decision

Justice John Okoro, who presided over the case, described the suit as a misuse of judicial processes. The court maintained that Owuru’s case was time-barred, as the 180-day window for election-related disputes had long expired. The apex court further admonished the plaintiff for filing a suit with no substantive grounds, emphasizing that such actions only served to waste judicial resources.

The decision reinforces President Tinubu’s legitimacy and dismisses allegations that could undermine the country’s democratic stability.

The ruling has sparked mixed reactions across political circles. While supporters of President Tinubu lauded the judgment as a victory for the rule of law, critics described the case as a distraction from pressing national issues.

Owuru, on the other hand, has yet to make a formal statement on the court’s decision.

This ruling marks another key moment in Nigeria’s judicial and political landscape, solidifying Tinubu’s position amidst ongoing debates and criticisms.
