President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to celebrating and encouraging the success of Nigerians abroad, emphasizing that positive reports on their achievements will serve as inspiration for the younger generation. The President made these remarks while receiving a delegation from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Tinubu acknowledged the significant contributions of Nigerians in various fields across the globe, noting that their accomplishments project a positive image of the country. He stated that it is crucial to recognize and amplify these success stories to counter negative narratives and foster national pride. According to him, many Nigerians excel in medicine, technology, business, entertainment, and sports, proving that the nation possesses immense talent and potential.

The President reiterated that his administration remains committed to supporting Nigerians both at home and abroad, ensuring that they continue to thrive. He urged government agencies to actively engage with the diaspora community, emphasizing that their expertise and investments could play a vital role in national development. Tinubu called for a structured approach to harnessing the contributions of Nigerians overseas, particularly in sectors that align with the administration’s economic policies.

Speaking during the meeting, the Chairperson of NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, commended Tinubu for his interest in diaspora affairs. She highlighted various achievements of Nigerians abroad, including those making waves in the corporate world, academia, and governance. Dabiri-Erewa noted that the commission continues to work closely with the diaspora to ensure that their rights and interests are protected while also creating avenues for them to contribute to Nigeria’s progress.

In a related statement, Tinubu underscored the need to celebrate successful Nigerians abroad as a means to inspire young people within the country. He argued that showcasing these positive role models would motivate youths to strive for excellence, reinforcing the idea that hard work and dedication can yield remarkable success. He assured that his administration would strengthen policies that enable Nigerians abroad to engage more effectively with the country’s development agenda.

The President also emphasized the importance of the diaspora’s remittances, which serve as a significant source of foreign exchange for the Nigerian economy. He noted that beyond financial contributions, the diaspora community holds immense intellectual and professional capital that could drive innovation and economic growth. He called on stakeholders to ensure that returning professionals and investors face minimal bureaucratic hurdles when engaging with the Nigerian system.

Furthermore, Tinubu acknowledged the challenges faced by some Nigerians abroad and assured that his government is committed to providing necessary diplomatic and consular support. He emphasized that while many Nigerians are excelling internationally, efforts must also be made to assist those facing difficulties.

The discussions at the meeting also touched on strategies to strengthen collaborations between the government and the diaspora, including initiatives that encourage knowledge transfer, investments, and mentorship programs. Tinubu assured that his administration would work to create an enabling environment that allows Nigerians abroad to actively participate in national development efforts.

The President’s remarks come at a time when global attention on diaspora engagement continues to grow, with many nations leveraging their overseas communities for economic and social advancements. Tinubu’s administration appears to be taking similar steps to ensure that Nigeria benefits from the successes of its citizens abroad.
