New Year

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s New Year address has sparked a mix of reactions, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) criticizing the speech for lacking substantive solutions to unemployment and poverty. Meanwhile, the Federal Government has announced plans to ease access to loans for Nigerians as part of its 2025 economic strategy.

The PDP has labeled Tinubu’s New Year message as uninspiring, accusing it of failing to address the pressing issues of hunger, unemployment, and insecurity plaguing the country. The opposition party expressed disappointment, noting that Nigerians expected concrete policy directions to tackle the economic and social challenges.

In a statement, the PDP said, “The president’s speech offered no hope or actionable plans for the teeming youths struggling with unemployment or for millions of Nigerians facing hunger.”

In contrast, the Federal Government has highlighted plans to improve access to loans for Nigerians as part of its economic growth strategy for 2025. According to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, the initiative aims to support small businesses and stimulate job creation across the country.

Betta Edu assured Nigerians that 2025 holds great potential for prosperity, stating, “Our government is committed to policies that empower citizens and create opportunities. Easing loan accessibility is one of the steps we are taking to ensure economic stability and growth.”

While the PDP has focused on critiquing the perceived lack of direction in the president’s address, government officials, including Edu, have expressed optimism about the future. Edu’s remarks were echoed by other officials, who called for unity and collective effort to achieve national progress.

However, analysts have pointed out that the Federal Government will need to ensure that its initiatives, such as the loan accessibility plan, are implemented effectively and reach the intended beneficiaries.

Amid the mixed reactions, Nigerians have called on the government to prioritize inclusive policies that address widespread poverty and unemployment while fostering sustainable development. Many citizens are looking forward to the implementation of the government’s promises in the months ahead.
