Boat Mishap

A tragic boat accident in Benue State has claimed the lives of at least 20 people, while 11 others were rescued. The incident occurred on River Buruku when a boat ferrying passengers capsized, plunging its occupants into the river.

The boat, reportedly overloaded, was carrying passengers across the river for a community gathering. According to eyewitnesses, the vessel capsized due to strong currents and instability caused by excessive weight.

The Benue State Police Command confirmed the rescue of 11 passengers and the recovery of 20 bodies as of Saturday, December 14. Search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate any remaining victims.

The police and emergency services have intensified efforts to recover additional bodies and provide aid to survivors. The Benue State Police PRO, SP Sewuese Anene, emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent future incidents.

Boat mishaps have become a recurring issue in Nigeria, often linked to poor safety practices, overloading, and lack of adherence to regulations. Authorities are urging communities to prioritize safety by limiting the number of passengers and using life jackets during water travel.

The tragedy has left the local community in mourning, with residents calling for immediate government intervention to improve waterway safety and prevent further loss of lives.

This incident underscores the urgent need for awareness campaigns, enforcement of maritime safety laws, and infrastructural development to ensure safer waterways across Nigeria.
