Violence Erupts

Anambra State witnessed a surge in violence on Monday as gunmen enforcing the sit-at-home order carried out deadly attacks across two communities. Reports indicate that at least five people lost their lives, including four security operatives, with others critically injured. The attacks occurred amidst heightened tensions in the region, as residents face recurring disruptions linked to the sit-at-home directive.

According to eyewitness accounts, the violence began in the early hours of the day when gunmen targeted security operatives stationed at strategic locations in Anambra. The attackers, believed to be enforcing the sit-at-home order, opened fire, resulting in the deaths of four security officers. In a separate incident, a town union president-general (PG) was critically injured in one of the communities.

Residents described the atmosphere as tense and chaotic, with businesses shuttered and people afraid to leave their homes. “The streets were empty, and gunshots could be heard throughout the morning,” a resident recounted. Many people have expressed frustration over the recurring violence linked to the sit-at-home order, which has significantly disrupted daily life and economic activities in the region.

Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incidents and assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators. A police spokesperson stated, “We are investigating the attacks and taking steps to restore normalcy in the affected areas. We urge residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.”

The sit-at-home order, originally introduced by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to demand the release of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has frequently been marked by violence and non-compliance through coercion. While IPOB leadership claims to have suspended the order, certain factions and unknown gunmen have continued enforcing it with threats and violence, creating confusion and fear in the region.

Community leaders and stakeholders have called for urgent intervention to address the insecurity stemming from the sit-at-home enforcement. They emphasized the need for dialogue and proactive measures to prevent further loss of lives and property.

This latest incident adds to the growing concerns about security in southeastern Nigeria, where violent attacks, kidnapping, and enforcement of the sit-at-home order have destabilized the region. The state government and security agencies face increasing pressure to implement solutions that ensure the safety and well-being of residents while addressing the underlying issues driving the unrest.
