Poultry Industry

On August 28, 2023, Senegal officially launched a $100 million project aimed at advancing the nation’s poultry industry. The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance food security, reduce poultry imports, and increase local production capacity.

The project, funded in collaboration with international donors and private sector stakeholders, focuses on modernizing poultry farming facilities, improving feed quality, and providing farmers with access to better technology. The Ministry of Agriculture stated that the program is expected to create thousands of jobs and support small-scale poultry farmers by offering training programs and resources for efficient and sustainable poultry farming practices.

According to government sources, a significant portion of the funding will go toward building new poultry farms and upgrading existing facilities to meet international production standards. The initiative will also prioritize the production of poultry feed locally, reducing dependency on imported feed ingredients and stabilizing supply chains within the industry.

Senegal’s poultry sector has been expanding steadily, but it faces challenges such as high production costs and competition from imported products. By increasing domestic production and enhancing the quality of poultry products, the government aims to make locally-produced poultry more affordable and accessible to consumers.

Through this initiative, Senegal hopes to reach a level of poultry self-sufficiency within the next few years. In a statement, the Minister of Agriculture emphasized the importance of this project, noting that increased poultry production will contribute significantly to food security and stimulate economic growth in rural areas.

This project marks a significant step for Senegal as it seeks to build a resilient poultry industry that can adapt to market changes and support the growing demand for poultry products.
