Addis Ababa: Thousands Mark Orthodox Christmas Eve

Addis Ababa

Ethiopia celebrated Orthodox Christmas Eve on Tuesday with a massive candlelight ceremony in the heart of Addis Ababa. Thousands of worshippers converged on Meskel Square for an evening of prayer, traditional hymns, and a midnight Mass, marking one of the most significant dates on the country’s religious calendar.

A Night of Prayer and Tradition

The square was a sea of white as congregants, many wearing traditional Ethiopian attire, gathered to participate in the service. Led by priests of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the ceremony transitioned into an all-night vigil.

This spiritual event marks the conclusion of a 43-day period of fasting, a rigorous tradition observed by the faithful leading up to the holiday. Because the Ethiopian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar, Christmas is officially celebrated on January 7.

Breaking the Fast

Following the midnight Mass, families traditionally return home to break their long fast. The occasion is typically marked by:

  • Traditional Feasts: Sharing specially prepared meat dishes, such as doro wat (spicy chicken stew).
  • Family Gatherings: Reconnecting with loved ones after the period of abstinence.
  • Community Spirit: A shared sense of relief and joy as the festive season begins.

Spiritual Continuity Amid Regional Challenges

While the atmosphere in the capital remained peaceful and serene, the celebrations took place against a backdrop of ongoing security concerns in regions like Amhara and Oromia. Despite these domestic tensions, the massive turnout in Addis Ababa demonstrated a collective yearning for stability and the preservation of long-standing cultural identities.

A Deeply Rooted History

Christianity in Ethiopia is not merely a religion but a foundational pillar of national identity. The country adopted the faith in the fourth century, making it one of the oldest Christian nations in the world. Historically linked to the Church of Alexandria, Ethiopia’s unique Orthodox traditions have survived centuries of isolation, remaining a central part of the country’s social fabric today.
