Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly met with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Friday to reinforce Cairo’s commitment to regional stability. During the high-level meeting, Madbouly emphasized that Egypt is dedicated to preserving Lebanon’s security during this critical period.
Cairo is currently working to prevent further escalation between Lebanon and Israel. These efforts come as tensions rise over the disarmament process of Hezbollah. Consequently, Egypt is leveraging its diplomatic influence to ensure the situation does not spiral into a wider conflict.
A Continued Role in Mediation
Egypt has a long history of regional mediation, notably since signing its peace treaty with Israel in 1979. For several months, Cairo has been actively de-escalating tensions across the Middle East. Madbouly’s arrival follows recent strategic visits to Beirut by Egypt’s foreign minister and its intelligence chief.
Key Goals of the Egyptian Delegation:
- Security Advocacy: Pushing for a peaceful resolution to the Hezbollah disarmament issue.
- Economic Cooperation: Strengthening bilateral ties between Cairo and Beirut.
- Diplomatic Support: Reaffirming Egypt’s role as a stabilizing force in the Arab world.
The Ceasefire Context
The visit aligns with significant diplomatic movements on the ground. Specifically, the committee monitoring the U.S.-brokered ceasefire met on Friday. This truce, which halted hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah a year ago, remains a cornerstone of current peace efforts.
Madbouly’s discussions in the capital focused on addressing these pressing regional developments. He reiterated that Egypt will spare no effort in supporting Lebanon’s state institutions and maintaining civil peace
