Israel to Maintain Gaza Control, Push for West Bank Annexation

GAZA

Israeli officials have recently signaled a firm commitment to a long-term military presence in Gaza. Additionally, the government is moving forward with plans for official sovereignty over the West Bank.

These announcements come as regional peace efforts remain stalled. Specifically, Hamas has refused to disarm, a key requirement for the proposed transitional authority.

Israeli official Katz delivered these remarks at Beit El. He emphasized that the military is now positioned deep within Gaza. Furthermore, he stated clearly that Israel will never fully withdraw from the territory.

Security Beyond Borders

According to Katz, a permanent presence is necessary to protect Israeli citizens. He argued that the state cannot rely on external parties for its safety. Consequently, Israel is maintaining a defensive posture that also includes monitoring threats from Lebanon and Syria.

Key security points from the official statement:

  • Permanent Presence: The military intends to stay in Gaza to prevent future escalations.
  • Self-Reliance: Officials expressed a lack of trust in multinational forces for protection.
  • Regional Vigilance: Security concerns extend to neighboring borders.

The Era of Practical Sovereignty

The administration led by Prime Minister Netanyahu is also prioritizing settlement expansion. Katz described the current leadership as a “settlements government” that is actively seeking sovereignty over the West Bank.

“If we can get sovereignty, we will bring about sovereignty,” Katz stated. He noted that Israel is now in a “practical sovereignty era,” citing rare historical opportunities to finalize control over the land.

While the international community generally views these settlements as illegal, Israel disputes this claim. Instead, officials point to deep historical and biblical ties to the territory as justification for their actions.

Political Context and Reactions

These policy shifts occur as Israel prepares for an election year in 2026. Because the settler movement is a vital part of the Likud party voter base, the push for sovereignty is a major political driver.

However, Palestinian officials have strongly condemned the rhetoric. A spokesperson labeled the comments a “dangerous escalation” that threatens regional stability and the possibility of a future Palestinian state.
