Lithuania Starts Drone Schools Near Russia for Defense

Lithuania

Lithuania’s Defence Ministry opened its first school on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, to teach drone skills. This program will expand to nine schools nationwide.

It targets children as young as 10 and adults, focusing on flying, assembling, and programming drones. The initiative aims to enhance military readiness near the Russian border.

Building Defense Against Neighbors

Deputy Defence Minister Tomas Godliauskas explained the program’s purpose. “It’s about strengthening military defenses.

Lithuania takes this seriously due to our proximity to Russia and Belarus,” he said. The schools prepare citizens for potential threats in the region.

Drone Types and Training Methods

Teacher Mindaugas Tamosaitis described the curriculum. Students learn to operate First Person View (FPV), quadcopter, and single-wing drones.

At the Taurage school, located 20 km from Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave, children practiced virtual flights on computers. One boy flew a mini drone under supervision, occasionally crashing it during training.

Enthusiastic Young Learners

The children showed great interest in the lessons, according to their teacher. This hands-on approach builds early skills in technology and defense.

Response to Regional Incidents

As a NATO member, Lithuania requested stronger air defenses after two Russian drones entered its airspace from Belarus this summer.

NATO announced plans last Friday to reinforce Europe’s eastern flank. This came two days after Poland downed drones that violated its airspace—the first such action by a NATO member during Russia’s war in Ukraine.
