Louvre Heist: Two Arrested in $102M Jewellery Theft

French authorities have detained two men linked to a bold theft of priceless jewellery from the Louvre Museum in Paris.

The suspects, hailing from a suburb northeast of the city, were apprehended after one attempted to flee via Charles de Gaulle Airport. The heist, valued at approximately $102 million (₦149.3 billion), has shocked the global art community.

Details of the Heist

On Sunday, October 19, four thieves armed with power tools executed a daytime break-in at the world-renowned museum. They smashed through two high-security display cases, stealing eight irreplaceable items.

The stolen treasures include a tiara and necklace from a historic sapphire collection, an emerald necklace and earrings, a reliquary brooch, and two ornate pieces, a tiara and a large bodice bow, linked to French royalty.

Swift Response

The intrusion triggered the museum’s alarm system, alerting the five staff members on duty. They promptly followed security protocols, contacting police and ensuring visitor safety.

Authorities quickly secured the area, with armed soldiers guarding the Louvre’s iconic glass pyramid entrance while police sealed off the premises for investigation.

Museum’s Historical Significance

The Louvre, the world’s largest museum, spans nearly 73,000 square meters and houses over 35,000 artworks. Originally constructed in 1546 as a royal palace, it transformed into a public museum in 1793 following the French Revolution. Today, it draws around 30,000 visitors daily, showcasing treasures like the Mona Lisa.
