Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine. He stated that Moscow will seek to extend its territorial gains if Kyiv and its Western allies reject the Kremlin’s demands in peace talks.
Speaking at an annual meeting with top military officers on Wednesday, Putin outlined his preference. He said Moscow would prefer to achieve its goals and “eliminate the root causes of the conflict” through diplomatic means.
However, he issued a clear threat regarding the alternative.
“If the opposing side and its foreign patrons refuse to engage in substantive dialogue, Russia will achieve the liberation of its historical lands by military means,” he declared.
The Push for a Peace Deal
US President Donald Trump is currently pushing hard for a peace deal. He aims to end the fighting that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
However, Washington faces sharply conflicting demands from both Moscow and Kyiv.
Putin acknowledged the US efforts during the meeting. He noted that Russia is ready to resolve issues peacefully and is currently conducting dialogue with the US administration.
Conversely, he expressed skepticism about Europe. Putin stated that negotiating with current European political elites was “unlikely.”
“But in any case it will become inevitable as we continue to strengthen. If not with the current politicians, then with a change of political elites in Europe,” he added.
Expanding the Buffer Zone
On the battlefield, Putin claimed that the Russian army holds the “strategic initiative” along the front line.
Consequently, he warned that Moscow would move to expand a “buffer security zone” along the Russian border. Furthermore, he praised Russia’s growing military might, specifically noting the modernization of its atomic arsenal.
These tough statements follow several rounds of talks this week. Ukrainian, American, and European officials have been discussing a US-drafted peace plan.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke after meeting with US envoys in Berlin. He stated that the document could be finalized within days and subsequently presented to the Kremlin.
Conflicting Demands
The gap between the two sides remains wide.
