Ramaphosa Attends G7 Summit Amid Global Tensions

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Calgary on Sunday, June 15, 2025, greeted by a welcome delegation, to attend the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Kananaskis, a scenic resort nestled in the Canadian Rockies.

The summit, hosting leaders from the world’s largest economies, runs through the week, addressing pressing global challenges against a backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions.

Global Crises Dominate Agenda

The G7 meeting is overshadowed by the intensifying Israel-Iran conflict, which has spiked oil prices and disrupted global markets, as well as U.S. President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade disputes with both allies and rivals.

The war in Ukraine remains a key focus, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attending to rally support.

Zelenskyy’s presence sets the stage for a high-stakes meeting with Trump, following their contentious Oval Office clash earlier this year, which exposed deep tensions over U.S. aid to Ukraine.

Ramaphosa’s Bilateral with Trump

On the sidelines, Ramaphosa is scheduled for a bilateral meeting with Trump, their first since a controversial May 2025 White House encounter.

During that meeting, Trump falsely claimed a “genocide” against white South Africans, sparking backlash and straining U.S.-South Africa relations.

The Kananaskis discussion offers a chance to address trade, security, and diplomatic ties.

Ukraine and Trade War in Focus

The summit’s agenda includes strategies to counter Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, with Zelenskyy seeking firm commitments on military and financial aid.

Trump’s trade policies, including tariffs impacting G7 members and China, will also face scrutiny.

Canada, as host, aims to foster consensus, but divisions over trade and Middle East policy may challenge unity.

The picturesque Kananaskis setting belies the gravity of discussions, with leaders under pressure to deliver actionable solutions.

South Africa’s Role at G7

Ramaphosa’s participation underscores South Africa’s growing influence in global forums, representing African perspectives on economic equity and climate issues.

His meetings, particularly with Trump, are critical for navigating U.S. trade policies affecting South Africa’s exports.

As the G7 grapples with a volatile world stage, Ramaphosa’s diplomacy could shape outcomes for the Global South amid crises in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
