Sudan Army Chief: No US Plan to Disband Military

SUDAN

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has expressed satisfaction with recent diplomatic talks. The head of Sudan’s armed forces received assurances regarding US policy. Envoys confirmed that the United States has not submitted a new proposal to disband the nation’s military.

This clarification emerged on Thursday. It happened during a high-level meeting in Port Sudan. General al-Burhan met with Andreas Kravik, Norway’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Envoy to Sudan.

Clearing the Confusion

Tensions rose significantly last week. General al-Burhan publicly denounced a rumored initiative. He believed the US was backing a plan to dissolve the Sudanese army.

However, the Norwegian envoy dismissed these concerns. He described the situation as a misunderstanding.

“The only proposal remains the one tabled several weeks ago,” Kravik stated. “Suggestions to the contrary are without foundation.”

The envoy urged all parties to focus on the existing framework. He emphasized the priority is a humanitarian truce. This should be followed by an inclusive political process to stabilize Sudan.

The Existing Roadmap

The current peace framework was introduced in September. A coalition involving the United States, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates created it.

The plan outlines a specific path forward. It calls for an immediate three-month humanitarian ceasefire. This pause aims to pave the way for a permanent end to hostilities. Ultimately, the goal is the restoration of an independent civilian government.

A Deepening Crisis

This diplomatic push occurs against a backdrop of devastation. The conflict has raged for over two years.

The power struggle involves the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Consequently, it has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian emergencies.

The war’s toll is staggering. At least 40,000 lives have been lost. Furthermore, over 12 million people have been displaced from their homes. Diplomats continue to press both factions to implement the truce immediately to stop the country’s slide into catastrophe.
