The Trump administration has officially suspended leases for five massive offshore wind projects currently under construction along the U.S. East Coast.
According to the Department of the Interior, the move is a response to critical national security concerns. Consequently, shares in major offshore wind companies plunged following the announcement on Monday.
This suspension is the latest challenge for a sector that has faced repeated disruptions under the current administration. President Donald Trump has frequently criticized the industry, labeling wind turbines as expensive, inefficient, and detrimental to the environment.
National Security and Radar Interference
The Interior Department stated that the suspension follows warnings from the Pentagon. Officials expressed concern that the motion of massive turbine blades and the highly reflective nature of the towers could cause significant radar interference.
The primary security risks identified include:
- Threat Identification: Interference may hinder the military’s ability to locate and identify airborne threats.
- Drone Vulnerability: Interior Secretary Doug Burgum noted concerns that these structures could leave the U.S. vulnerable to drone attacks.
- Risk Assessment: The pause allows federal agencies to work with state partners to determine if these risks can be mitigated.
Impacted Projects and Market Reaction
The freeze affects high-profile developments led by industry giants. These include Orsted’s Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind, Equinor’s Empire Wind 1, and Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind. Additionally, the Vineyard Wind 1 project, a joint venture between Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, is also suspended.
Following the news, shares of Orsted dropped by more than 12%. Other companies, including Dominion and Equinor, also saw significant declines.
Dominion Energy warned that the pause threatens grid reliability for critical infrastructure, such as military bases and data centers supporting artificial intelligence.
Industry and State Pushback
State officials and trade groups quickly condemned the administration’s decision, calling it “unjustified.” They pointed out that these projects had already undergone rigorous federal and military reviews under previous administrations without objection.
Key reactions include:
- Governor Kathy Hochul (NY): Described the move as an “assault on clean energy” with no credible justification.
- National Ocean Industries Association (NOIA): Urged the administration to end the pause quickly to protect thousands of local jobs.
- Legal Precedent: This move follows a previous attempt in August to halt Orsted’s construction, which was later overturned by a federal judge.
President Trump’s stance remains consistent with his campaign promises to prioritize oil and gas production while ending the offshore wind industry. As federal agencies conduct their assessment, the future of these multi-billion-dollar clean energy projects remains uncertain.
