The United Nations has raised alarm over the safety of civilians in Guinea. This follows the kidnapping of several relatives of Elie Kamano. Kamano is a well-known artist and opposition figure.

The attack happened at the singer’s home in the capital, Conakry. Armed men broke into the house. They forcibly took four people away. The victims included two of Kamano’s sons, who are both minors.

International Outcry

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has asked the government to act. A spokesperson for the UN urged Guinean authorities to intervene immediately.

They called for “all necessary measures” to ensure the family’s safe return. Furthermore, the UN demanded a credible investigation into the disappearances.

Kamano Blames the President

Kamano currently lives in exile. He released an emotional video demanding the release of his children.

In the video, he blamed the country’s leadership for the abduction. Specifically, he accused President Mamady Doumbouya. Kamano described the raid as a political attack. He believes the regime is trying to silence him.

“Release my family and all the other people who have been abducted for a very long time,” Kamano pleaded.

A Tense Political Climate

This kidnapping comes at a dangerous time for the West African nation. A military junta has ruled Guinea since September 2021. This followed a coup that removed former President Alpha Condé.

Since the takeover, observers have noted a rise in abuses. These include arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances.

Tensions are very high right now. The country is preparing for elections in December. These are the first elections since the coup.

Recently, the Supreme Court allowed President Doumbouya to run for president. However, his major rivals have been blocked. Former Prime Minister Lansana Kouyaté and Ousmane Kaba were barred from running on technical grounds.
