WHITEHOUSE

A security emergency unfolded in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday afternoon. Two members of the National Guard were shot just one block from the White House.

The incident triggered an immediate lockdown of the executive complex. Law enforcement officers swarmed the area to contain the threat.

Washington police acted quickly. They confirmed that one suspect is currently in custody. Authorities have declared the immediate area secure. However, a heavy security presence remains as investigators process the scene.

“Help! Help!”: Chaos on the Streets

The shooting occurred around 2:15 p.m. ET. It shattered the calm of a pre-holiday afternoon.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene. Pedestrians fled for safety as the violence erupted.

Stacey Walters, 43, was traveling in a vehicle nearby. She recounted hearing “two loud booms.” She then saw terrified bystanders, including young children, running from the scene.

Walters described hearing someone scream “Help! Help!” amidst the confusion. Furthermore, she saw U.S. Secret Service agents pursuing an individual. The suspect appeared to be wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

Official Response

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem addressed the incident on social media. She confirmed the casualties.

Noem stated that two Guard members had been shot. Federal agents are now working with local police to gather details on the attack.

President Trump Briefed

President Donald Trump was not in the White House during the breach. He is currently at his residence in Palm Beach, Florida, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed the President has been briefed. Additionally, Vice President JD Vance was absent from the capital. He is attending engagements in Kentucky.
