Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that negotiators remain divided over a new peace plan. The proposal, brokered by the United States, outlines specific territorial concessions. However, Zelensky confirmed that significant disagreements persist regarding these terms.
Speaking in a telephone interview on Monday, the President highlighted the main point of contention. Negotiators are particularly split over the control of eastern territories.
Divisions Over the Donbas
Zelensky noted that the key parties involved do not see eye-to-eye. Currently, the United States, Russia, and Ukraine lack a unified vision for the future of the Donbas region.
Beyond territorial disputes, the President indicated that other “sensitive issues” still require further discussion. He specifically pointed to security protocols. To address this, Kyiv is reportedly seeking a separate agreement. The government wants binding security guarantees from its Western allies, with a primary focus on commitments from the U.S.
Rallying European Support
Meanwhile, Washington is increasing pressure on Kyiv to accept the terms. The current draft was prepared by Donald Trump’s team. Consequently, Zelensky is scheduled to travel to London on Monday.
During this visit, he will meet with the leaders of Britain, France, and Germany. His goal is to rally European support for Ukraine’s position before making any final decisions.
Stalemate on the Agreement
U.S. officials maintain that the agreement is close to being finalized. However, the situation remains deadlocked. Neither Ukraine nor Russia has signaled a willingness to sign the proposed deal yet.
