Akili AI for African MSMEs

In a major step toward digitizing Africa’s small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) has partnered with Meta and Deloitte to launch Akili AI, an artificial intelligence-driven platform aimed at empowering businesses across the continent.

The initiative, unveiled on February 24, 2025, seeks to provide African entrepreneurs with cutting-edge AI tools, market insights, and digital training to enhance their operations, drive economic growth, and improve global competitiveness.

How Akili AI Works

Akili AI is designed to support MSMEs by offering personalized business insights, financial guidance, and marketing strategies powered by artificial intelligence. The platform will focus on:

  • Business Intelligence: AI-driven analytics to help entrepreneurs make informed decisions.
  • Financial Management: Digital tools to streamline accounting, budgeting, and access to funding.
  • Marketing & Branding: AI-powered recommendations for online advertising and social media engagement.
  • E-learning & Training: Access to business development courses and AI-based mentorship.

Empowering African Entrepreneurs

Speaking at the launch event, AUDA-NEPAD’s Chief Executive Officer, Nardos Bekele-Thomas, emphasized that Akili AI will level the playing field for African businesses, giving them access to the same digital innovations driving global enterprises.

“Our goal is to bridge the digital gap and equip African MSMEs with smart tools that enhance productivity, scalability, and innovation,” Bekele-Thomas stated.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, highlighted its commitment to supporting African entrepreneurs in the digital space. Kojo Boakye, Meta’s Director of Public Policy for Africa, said, “AI is a game-changer for businesses, and through Akili AI, we aim to provide MSMEs with the tools they need to compete globally and thrive in the digital economy.”

Deloitte’s Role and AI-Driven Solutions

Global consulting firm Deloitte played a key role in developing Akili AI’s infrastructure, data security, and business intelligence features. The firm’s representative at the launch, Tunde Olatunji, noted that AI has the power to automate business operations, predict market trends, and improve customer engagement—all crucial elements for MSME success.

“With Africa’s MSME sector contributing over 80% of employment and 50% of GDP in many countries, adopting AI solutions is no longer optional—it’s a necessity for sustainable growth,” Olatunji added.

Transforming Africa’s Digital Economy

The introduction of Akili AI aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which prioritizes economic transformation through technology and innovation. Experts believe this platform could help millions of entrepreneurs access new opportunities, optimize business processes, and drive financial inclusion.

As AI adoption increases across Africa, initiatives like Akili AI will be instrumental in closing the digital divide, fostering entrepreneurship, and positioning African businesses for long-term success in the global market.

With its official rollout set for later this year, the platform is expected to revolutionize the way African MSMEs operate, providing them with smarter, faster, and more efficient business solutions.
