Chaima Issa Arrested Amid Tunisia Crackdown

TUNISIA

Tunisian security forces have arrested Chaima Issa, a prominent figure in the nation’s opposition movement, during a public protest in the capital on Saturday.

The detention marks a dramatic escalation in the state’s campaign against political dissent. It comes less than 24 hours after an appeals court handed down severe prison sentences to a coalition of the President’s fiercest critics, signaling a deepening political crisis in the North African nation.

“They Will Arrest Me Shortly”

Moments before she was taken into custody, Issa stood alongside other convicted politicians in a defiant show of solidarity. Addressing the gathered crowds, she issued a rallying cry to the country’s fractured opposition groups, urging them to unite against what she termed “tyranny.”

Aware of her precarious position, Issa predicted the police intervention.

“They will arrest me shortly,” she told demonstrators. She denounced the 20-year prison sentence she had just received as unjust and politically motivated, urging Tunisians to continue their resistance.

Harsh Sentences and Conspiracy Charges

The arrest follows a sweeping court ruling that sent shockwaves through the political establishment. The appeals court handed down jail terms ranging up to 45 years to a group of defendants that included opposition leaders, lawyers, and prominent business figures.

The accused were convicted on charges of conspiring to overthrow the government. Rights groups and international observers have slammed the verdicts. Human Rights Watch characterized the trial as a “travesty of justice,” viewing the proceedings as a tool to dismantle political competition.

Origins of the Crisis

The current turmoil traces back to July 2021, when President Kais Saied executed a sweeping power grab. He suspended parliament and significantly expanded his executive authority, allowing him to rule by decree.

Since consolidating power, the administration has jailed numerous critics. While the opposition decries these moves as a slide toward authoritarianism, President Saied maintains that his actions are strictly legal and necessary to end years of political chaos and root out rampant corruption within the state.
