Kanye West

A new documentary, In Whose Name?, directed by Nico Ballesteros, offers an intimate look at six transformative years in the life of Kanye West, now known as Ye.

Released in select U.S. theaters in September 2025, the film captures the rapper’s creative peaks, personal challenges, and cultural impact without holding back.

Director’s Close Access

Ballesteros, who started filming Ye as a teenager, became a trusted confidant, documenting 12 to 18 hours daily. From backstage chats with figures like Elon Musk to private family moments, he recorded it all.

“Ye never asked me to stop filming,” Ballesteros said. “We shared a vision to tell an honest story, no matter where it led.”

Balancing Light and Dark

Ye urged Ballesteros to portray both his triumphs and struggles. Drawing from films like The Aviator and There Will Be Blood, the director crafted a narrative about genius, fame, and America’s cultural landscape.

“It’s about the weight of celebrity and confronting idol worship,” Ballesteros explained, framing the film as a conversation starter rather than a judgment on Ye’s controversies.

Emotional Screening

Ballesteros showed an early version to Ye at Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont. “It was like watching his life as if he’d passed,” the director recalled.

“We sat in silence, reflecting on the journey we captured together.” The moment underscored their shared bond and the film’s raw honesty.

Cultural Reflection

Produced by AMSI Entertainment, In Whose Name? invites viewers to reflect on fame and society.

Its limited release marks a bold exploration of Ye’s complex legacy, sparking dialogue about his influence and challenges.
