Shirt dispute controversy leads to cancellation of CAF Cup tie between Moroccan and Algerian Teams

A dispute over football jerseys has once again led to the cancellation of an important match in North Africa, highlighting the ongoing tensions between Morocco and Algeria.

The issue started when Algerian customs officials seized the jerseys of RS Berkane, a Moroccan football club. The problem? The jerseys featured a map showing the disputed Western Sahara region.

This led to the cancellation of the first leg of their African Confederation Cup tie against USM Alger.

Despite the tension, there were friendly gestures when the Algerian team, USM Alger, arrived in Morocco for the scheduled match. Moroccan officials warmly welcomed them, stressing the friendship between the two countries and their sports communities.

“We welcomed the USM Alger team with flowers, as a sign of the love and friendship between our two nations. We offered them all the resources and sports facilities they needed,” said Abdeslam Belkchour, president of the Moroccan Professional Football League.

Kamel Hassina, president of USM Alger, appreciated the gesture, saying, “The reception was great. Thank you, brothers. This was a friendly welcome.”

However, due to the cancellation of the match, RS Berkane was awarded a 3-0 victory, advancing them to the final of the tournament.

The map on the jerseys reignited the long-standing tensions between Morocco and Algeria over Western Sahara. Western Sahara is mostly under Moroccan control, but Algeria supports the Polisario Front, which seeks independence for the region. This dispute has caused years of conflict between the two nations.

Just before the match was set to begin, USM Alger unexpectedly left the stadium, leaving RS Berkane and the crowd confused. The match’s cancellation disappointed football fans and left both teams frustrated.

This is not the first time a football jersey dispute has caused political problems between Morocco and Algeria. Despite efforts to promote goodwill and sportsmanship, the political issues continue to affect sporting events in the region.

The abrupt exit of USM Alger from the stadium took everyone by surprise, further deepening the sense of disappointment among the fans.

What was meant to be a thrilling semi-final in the African Confederation Cup turned into a reminder of how political tensions can spill over into sports.

For football lovers in both countries, the cancellation was a major letdown. Fans had hoped to see a competitive match between two strong teams, but instead, they were left with questions and frustration.

The political undertones of the dispute over the Western Sahara have now reached beyond diplomacy and into the sports arena, casting a shadow over the spirit of the game.

Despite the setbacks, Moroccan officials emphasized that sports should be a way to unite, not divide. They reiterated their commitment to keeping the door open for future sporting cooperation between the two nations, even with the ongoing political issues.

Meanwhile, RS Berkane’s journey continues as they head to the final, but their victory feels hollow to some, as they were awarded the win without stepping onto the field.

The team’s players and fans would have preferred to earn their spot in the final through a proper contest, rather than benefiting from the cancellation.

For USM Alger, the sudden withdrawal raises concerns about how the team will move forward in international tournaments. The political situation continues to create complications, and it’s unclear how it will impact future games, not only in football but also in other sports.

As tensions persist, both Morocco and Algeria face a difficult challenge: balancing their political disagreements while preserving the integrity of sportsmanship.

Whether they can set aside their differences in future competitions remains to be seen, but for now, the football rivalry between the two nations is overshadowed by much deeper issues.
