The White House has officially launched a TikTok account, even as President Donald Trump continues to postpone enforcement of a law requiring the platform’s sale or ban in the United States.

White House Debuts on TikTok

The new account went live on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, with its first post captioned: “America we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?” The 27-second video quickly attracted attention, gaining over 4,500 followers within an hour.

Trump himself remains one of TikTok’s most prominent users, with more than 15 million followers. He has credited the platform with helping him connect to young voters during his successful 2024 presidential campaign against Kamala Harris.

Trump’s Stance on TikTok

Although Trump initially pushed for a ban on TikTok back in 2020, citing national security concerns, his position shifted after he joined the platform last year.

He argued that TikTok played a key role in rallying youth support, and has since vowed to defend it.

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, emphasized the administration’s commitment to reaching Americans across all platforms, describing TikTok as an important space for sharing “the historic successes of President Trump.”

Deadline Extensions and National Security Debate

A federal law mandating TikTok’s sale or ban was meant to take effect on January 20, 2025, the day of Trump’s inauguration. However, Trump has repeatedly extended the deadline, with the latest extension pushing the decision into mid-September.

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has been in talks with U.S. officials to find a solution, but has noted that any deal would also need approval under Chinese law. The app currently boasts around 170 million users in the U.S. and nearly 2 billion worldwide.

A Political Flashpoint

TikTok has become a major political issue in Washington, with both Republicans and Democrats warning of potential risks linked to Chinese ownership. Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor of banning the platform in 2024, a move later upheld by the Supreme Court.

Despite the political pressure, Trump has embraced TikTok, even hosting CEO Shou Zi Chew at his Mar-a-Lago estate and inviting him to his inauguration earlier this year.

Competing Platforms

While Trump’s TikTok presence is growing, his preferred social media outlet remains Truth Social, the platform he owns, where he has over 10 million followers.

His X  account has 108 million followers, while the official White House accounts maintain 2.4 million on X and 9.3 million on Instagram.

As the September deadline approaches, the future of TikTok in the U.S. remains uncertain. The White House’s new account signals that, at least for now, Trump is betting on the app’s influence to strengthen his digital presence.
