A fire broke out in the cellar deck of Chevron’s Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) platform, located offshore Angola in Block 14 on May 20, 2025.

This incident, occurred during a scheduled maintenance shutdown, and claimed three lives and injured 17 workers, with four in critical condition.

Two workers succumbed to injuries in South African hospitals on May 24 and May 27, while the body of a third, initially reported missing, is being recovered from the sea for identification.

Response and Recovery Efforts

Chevron’s Angolan subsidiary, Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (Cabgoc), confirmed the fatalities and expressed condolences, stating it is supporting affected families and contractors.

The company in collaboration with the Angolan navy, Civil Protection, Fire Brigade Command, Port Captaincy, and Police are working to recover and identify the third worker’s body.

Some injured workers have been discharged, while others remain in specialized medical facilities in South Africa.

Investigation Underway

The fire, which began at 3 a.m. local time, was controlled by Chevron employees, but the cause remains under investigation.

A government source noted the incident occurred as the BBLT platform, was set to resume operations post-maintenance.

Chevron has not confirmed a return-to-service date, citing ongoing investigations.

Impact and Safety Concerns

The tragedy has raised questions about offshore oil platform safety.

The incident also underscores the risks in Angola’s oil industry, a key economic driver.

As recovery efforts continues, Chevron’s commitment to supporting affected workers and families remains a focus, with the industry watching closely for updates on safety measures.
