Hajj

As the annual Hajj pilgrimage begins this Wednesday, over two million Muslims from across the world are arriving in the sacred city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to fulfill one of the five pillars of Islam.

For many, this spiritual journey is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation, one that demands physical endurance, unwavering faith, and emotional strength.

A Journey of Faith and Endurance

Hajj is more than a ritual, it’s a profound spiritual undertaking. Pilgrims walk over 25 kilometers in a single day, often under blistering heat, surrounded by vast crowds from every corner of the globe.

The journey is marked by limited privacy, shared space, and intense devotion.

But for many, including first-timers, the challenge is part of the blessing.

A Prayer for Peace in Troubled Lands

For Egyptian pilgrim Layla Saad, the Hajj is not only personal, but also deeply political.

“My first prayer, God willing, will be for the people of Gaza and Sudan,” she shared.
“May our Lord spare the bloodshed in all Arab countries.”

She described her arrival at the Grand Mosque as awe-inspiring

Saudi Arabia Boosts Safety and Services for Pilgrims

To manage the influx of pilgrims and the challenges that come with it, Saudi authorities have dramatically expanded their health and emergency infrastructure.

Health Minister Fahad bin Abdulrahman Al-Jalajel outlined major upgrades:

  • A 60% increase in hospital bed capacity at the holy sites

  • A new 200-bed emergency hospital in Mina

  • Three additional field hospitals, supported by national guard, defence, and interior ministries

To combat extreme heat, 10,000 trees have been planted by the Royal Commission for Makkah, and shaded areas with misting fans have been expanded.

Drones Take to the Skies to Enhance Safety

In a first, drone technology is being deployed to monitor crowds, respond to emergencies, and deliver medical supplies across congested areas.

“The drone service solves a major challenge,” said Al-Jalajel.
“With large crowds and road congestion, ground transport of urgent medical supplies can be delayed — but drones allow us to act instantly.”

The Spirit of Unity and Faith

Despite the challenges — physical strain, language barriers, and extreme temperatures, pilgrims remain united by faith.

For millions, Hajj is not just a journey across miles. It’s a journey within — one of spiritual rebirth, sacrifice, and connection to a global Muslim community.
