Kenya Airways Profit Marks a Major Turnaround After a Decade of Losses
Kenya Airways has finally recorded a pretax profit of 5.53 billion shillings ($42.82 million) in 2024, marking its first profitable year since 2013. This achievement follows more than a decade of financial struggles, with the airline reporting a loss of 22.86 billion shillings in 2023.
Michael Joseph, chairman of the airline’s board of directors, celebrated the milestone, stating:
“I think we can be proud that the national carrier has produced a profit.”
The Kenya Airways profit was largely fueled by foreign-exchange gains, as the local currency strengthened by more than 20% against the U.S. dollar in 2024.
Forex Gains and Cost Reduction Drive Kenya Airways Profit
One of the biggest contributors to the Kenya Airways profit was a foreign-exchange gain of 10.55 billion shillings, compared to a loss of 15.04 billion shillings in 2023. The airline also benefitted from higher revenues and reduced costs, resulting in an operating profit of 16.62 billion shillings, up from 10.53 billion shillings in 2023.
Kenya Airways had faced financial difficulties due to:
- A failed expansion strategy that left it in deep debt
- COVID-19 travel restrictions, which severely impacted global aviation
- A weakened local currency and rising interest rates over 2022-2023

Despite these challenges, cost-cutting measures and government financial support have played a crucial role in stabilizing the airline’s finances.
Kenya Airways Looks to Future Growth with Fleet Expansion
The Kenya Airways profit signals a positive outlook for the national carrier, but more steps are needed to sustain growth. The Kenyan government has been investing in infrastructure improvements, including plans to modernize Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), which is currently operating above capacity.
Chairman Michael Joseph emphasized that enhancing airport facilities and expanding the airline’s fleet would further boost Kenya Airways’ performance.
With these improvements, Kenya Airways is poised for long-term success in the competitive aviation industry.
