The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has officially begun, and the host nation has claimed its first victory. Despite a rainy Friday night in Rabat, Morocco defeated Comoros 2-0 to launch their tournament campaign.

The highlight of the evening at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium was an incredible overhead kick from Ayoub El Kaabi. This spectacular goal effectively secured the three points for the Atlas Lions and thrilled the home crowd.

The Match Highlights: A Goal to Remember

Morocco controlled the game from the start but struggled to break through a tough Comoros defense. However, the game changed when El Kaabi’s acrobatic finish found the back of the net.

Fans in attendance shared their excitement:

  • Spectacle: “A spectacular bicycle kick, honestly. Incredible,” said one fan.
  • Pride: Another supporter noted that the goal made the rainy trip completely worth it.

This victory puts Morocco at the top of their group. It provides the perfect momentum for their goal of winning a second continental title on home soil.

Captain’s View: “We Will Grow Stronger”

While the hosts secured the win, captain Romain Saiss believes the team can still improve. Speaking after the match, he acknowledged that first games are always challenging.

“Not everything was perfect, but it’s a first match,” Saiss remarked. “I know we’re going to grow stronger. We’ll work, recover, and then focus on Mali.”

Comoros Shows Resilience

Comoros earned praise for their disciplined performance, particularly in the first half. Goalkeeper Yannick Pandor was the hero for his side, making five crucial saves. He expressed pride in his team’s effort, hoping their defensive work would help them in future matches.

A Global Stage in North Africa

FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended the opening ceremony and praised Morocco’s world-class infrastructure. Experts believe that as Africa’s highest-ranked team, Morocco has the talent to win the tournament. However, former players warn that the squad must handle the intense pressure of being the hosts.

The race for Africa’s biggest prize will continue until the final on January 17, 2026.
