The trial of Constant Mutamba, former Minister of Justice in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), resumed at the Court of Cassation on July 23, 2025.

The case centers on accusations of embezzlement related to a prison construction project in Kisangani, capturing widespread attention.

A High-Profile Case Unfolds

The Court of Cassation, the DRC’s highest court, is examining charges against Mutamba for allegedly mismanaging funds intended for a new prison in Kisangani.

A $19 million financial transfer is at the heart of the prosecution’s case, raising concerns about transparency and accountability.

Legal Motions Rejected

On July 23, Mutamba’s lawyers tried to delay the trial by raising two procedural issues. The court quickly dismissed these attempts, moving forward with the proceedings.

The second day featured a lengthy four-hour questioning session, which Mutamba called a “historic” moment.

Mutamba’s Defense: Standing Firm

Taking the stand, Mutamba passionately defended himself, saying, “I’m fighting for my future—please let me speak.”

He denied any wrongdoing, firmly stating, “I never took a single dollar, as the records will show.”

Explaining the Contract and Transfer

Mutamba addressed the prison project contract, which was awarded through direct negotiation, He claimed it was approved by the Prime Minister and followed proper procedures.

On the $19 million transfer, he insisted it was done lawfully and promised to provide proof.

He also clarified why an account with Zion company was opened just before the transaction.

Mutamba explained that the company switched banks to match the ministry’s, saving $300,000 in fees. These points were key to his defense during the intense questioning.

A Political Fight

As the hearing continued, Mutamba’s statements took a bold turn.

He declared, “I chose not to flee or hide. I’m ready to fight for my people, my country, and my continent. I’ll see this through, no matter the cost.”

His lawyer, Joël Kitenge, emphasized the trial’s significance, calling it a defining moment for Mutamba’s legacy.

The court paused the trial, setting the next session for July 30, 2025. This case continues to spark discussions about governance, transparency, and the fight against corruption in the DRC.
