Africa’s retail landscape boasts impressive architectural and commercial scale. The continent claims some of the world’s most expansive shopping centers. Consequently, these massive malls serve as key hubs for commerce, leisure, and entertainment.

The top eight largest shopping malls in Africa as of 2025 demonstrate growing consumer markets. These significant markets thrive in nations like South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, and Morocco.

North Africa Dominates in Scale

North Africa features major centers that rank among the continent’s largest.

  • Morocco Mall (Casablanca, Morocco): This mall stands out for its vast size, unique design features, and luxury offerings.
  • Mall of Arabia (Cairo, Egypt): Located in Egypt’s capital, this retail center serves as a massive commercial venue for a dense population base.
  • Cairo Festival City Mall (Cairo, Egypt): This large center features a spacious, open-air concept. It also offers extensive entertainment facilities.

South Africa’s Retail Powerhouses

South Africa maintains a strong presence. It hosts four of the largest malls on the list. Furthermore, this underscores its long-established consumer economy.

  • Gateway Theatre of Shopping (Durban): This venue blends retail with extensive entertainment options. These include cinemas and theme park elements.
  • Menlyn Park Shopping Centre (Pretoria): South Africa’s super-regional centers recognize this mall. It is known for its wide variety of tenants.
  • Canal Walk (Cape Town): Situated in the iconic city of Cape Town, this mall is one of the largest in the entire Southern Hemisphere. It is known for its distinct architecture.
  • Mall of Africa (Midrand, Johannesburg): This immense complex was one of the largest single-phase developments ever built in South Africa. Thus, it reflects modern retail scale.

East Africa’s Emergence

East Africa’s rising commercial status gains recognition through its inclusion on the list. The Business Bay Square Mall (BBS Mall) in Nairobi, Kenya, represents a significant new investment. Its size and modern design signal the rapid expansion of East Africa’s organized retail sector.
