Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has officially presented the staff of office to the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Olayemi Owoade, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the ancient Oyo kingdom. The historic event, held at the Oyo Township Stadium on January 12, drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, including traditional rulers and political leaders.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, commended the selection of Oba Owoade and urged him to work closely with other traditional rulers and leaders in the state to foster unity and drive development. Speaking at the event, the Ooni emphasized the importance of collaboration, saying, “The progress of Oyo lies in the hands of its leaders. We must rise above divisions and focus on the collective good.”

Oba Owoade, who succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, was selected after a rigorous process involving the Oyomesi, the traditional kingmakers of Oyo. His emergence has been widely hailed, with Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, describing him as a visionary leader capable of upholding the legacy of the Alaafin throne.

In his inaugural speech, Oba Owoade pledged to prioritize the welfare of his people and uphold the rich cultural heritage of the Oyo Kingdom. He expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde and the Oyomesi for their support and promised to be a bridge between tradition and modernization.

Following his installation, the new Alaafin is set to begin the customary 21-day traditional rites that will solidify his role as the spiritual and cultural leader of the Oyo Kingdom. This period will include rituals and ceremonies designed to connect the monarch with the ancestral lineage of the Alaafin throne.

Governor Makinde lauded the peaceful selection process and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting traditional institutions. He called on the people of Oyo to rally behind their new monarch, emphasizing that unity is crucial for the state’s development.

The emergence of Oba Owoade has been seen as a unifying factor in Oyo State, with various stakeholders expressing optimism about his reign. The Alaafin’s throne, one of the most revered in Yoruba history, carries immense cultural and political significance, and expectations are high for the new monarch to lead with wisdom and integrity.
