Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Governing Council exonerates VC of sexual harassment allegations.

The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has officially exonerated Vice Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fasina, of all allegations of sexual harassment made against him by a staff member, Engr. Folasade Adebayo.

This decision was reached during an extraordinary meeting of the council held on April 8, 2025, following a thorough review of the report submitted by the investigative committee constituted in January under the leadership of the council chairman, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN).

VC Abayomi Fasina Cleared of Sexual Harassment Claims

According to a statement issued by the university’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mufutau Ibrahim, the investigation revealed that no official complaint of sexual harassment was ever made by Engr. Adebayo.

This finding aligns with an earlier investigation by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), during which Adebayo stated that she was not sexually harassed.

The Council also criticised the secret audio recordings made by Engr. Adebayo of her conversations with the Vice Chancellor without his consent.

It described the action as a violation of university regulations and a potential attempt at blackmail.

FUOYE Governing Council Orders Apology and Issues Warnings

As part of its resolutions, the Council directed Engr. Adebayo to:

  • Submit a formal apology to the Governing Council within seven days
  • Cease actions that could bring the university’s name into disrepute
  • Accept that her role as Acting Director of Works and Services ended due to the expiration of her tenure, not removal

The Council also warned FUOYE Management over the preferential treatment given to Adebayo, particularly the controversial backdating of her promotion to 2015 in 2024, and ordered a review of the promotion.

FUOYE VC to Exercise Caution Going Forward

Although exonerated, Professor Fasina was advised by the Governing Council to be more cautious and circumspect in his interactions with subordinates, to prevent further controversies.

Background to the Allegation

The case had generated public interest and internal tensions within Federal University Oye-Ekiti, especially with the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) FUOYE branch, clashing with management over related disciplinary matters.

With this latest development, the Governing Council hopes to restore stability and focus to the institution.
