On September 23, 2025, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) extended its strike ultimatum by two weeks.

The unions are urging the Federal Government to address long-standing welfare issues affecting university workers.

Ongoing Grievances

SSANU and NASU had earlier given a one-week deadline to resolve delayed allowances and uneven fund allocations.

Despite a June 2025 letter and a follow-up meeting in July with the Education Minister, there has been little progress.

Recent Talks With Government

A new letter signed by SSANU President Muhammed Ibrahim referenced a September 19 meeting with Abel Enitan, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education.

The meeting, attended by education and labor officials, focused on union demands but produced no firm commitments from the government.

Government’s Current Response

Following the ultimatum, the Federal Government established a joint committee to address the unions’ concerns.

The September 19 meeting included representatives from the university commission but left many key demands unresolved, prompting the unions to extend their deadline.

Strike Threat Looms

The JAC warned that without concrete action within the two-week period, universities could face industrial action.

The letter stressed that the government must act quickly to prevent disruptions in academic activities.

Wider Implications for Higher Education

This extension highlights the growing labor tensions in Nigeria’s university system.

SSANU and NASU continue to demand fair treatment and timely benefits to ensure stability in the country’s higher education sector.
