BILL

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State.

This significant development was confirmed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session on Thursday, November 6, 2025.

According to Akpabio, the President has signed the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe Establishment Bill 2025 into law.

New University Officially Established

The Senate President made the formal announcement to the chamber: “It is my honour to announce that the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe establishment bill 2025 has been assented to by Mr President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Akpabio noted the official legislative process. Following the Senate’s transmission of the certified copies of the bill, two authenticated copies were returned bearing the President’s signature. This action cements the university’s establishment as a federal institution.

“Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe establishment has come to stay,” he declared, extending congratulations to the people of Epe and Lagos State.

Focus on Specialized Education

The Senate President expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for what he called “opening the doors of education nationwide.” This move reinforces the President’s stated focus on expanding access to specialized higher education across the country.

The bill was originally sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and seconded by Deputy Majority Leader Oyelola Ashiru.

Nigeria currently operates about 72 federal universities. It also has 42 federal Polytechnics and 28 colleges of education, in addition to hundreds of private and state-owned tertiary institutions. Despite this large number, over 200 bills to establish new public universities are awaiting action in the National Assembly.

However, the federal government had previously imposed a seven-year freeze on creating new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in August.

That moratorium cited concerns over the proliferation of under-resourced institutions, the stretching of available funds, and a decline in overall academic quality.
