The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) reiterated its dedication to tackling Nigeria’s high number of out-of-school children.

Speaking at a retreat for senior staff at Tahir Guest Palace Hotel in Kano, on Thursday, July 24, 2025, UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Aisha Garba, outlined the commission’s progress and future goals.

A Mission for Universal Education

Dr. Garba emphasized UBEC’s core mission: ensuring every Nigerian child has access to quality basic education.

“Our goal is 100% access to education, reducing the number of out-of-school children—a major national challenge—and improving learning outcomes,” she said.

Expanding Infrastructure

UBEC has made significant strides in improving educational facilities. The commission has built 34 model and SMART schools nationwide to increase access to basic education.

Additionally, in collaboration with State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs), UBEC has:

  • Constructed over 3,700 classrooms.

  • Provided more than 142,000 units of furniture.

  • Positively impacted over 181,000 learners.

These efforts aim to create conducive learning environments for Nigerian children.

Enhancing Teacher Quality

To improve teaching standards, UBEC has prioritized its Teacher Professional Development Programme. This initiative equips educators with essential skills to enhance classroom learning.

“We’re not just managing a commission; we’re shaping the future of millions of Nigerian children,” Dr. Garba noted, highlighting the critical role of effective teaching.

Reflecting and Planning Ahead

The Kano retreat allowed UBEC’s leadership to review achievements since Dr. Garba assumed office six months ago.

It also served as a platform to set priorities for the next six months and beyond. Dr. Garba stressed the importance of teamwork and collaboration with state and national governments to align efforts and deliver quality education.

“We aim to leave this retreat more united, connected, and ready for the work ahead,” she said, expressing confidence in UBEC’s future impact.

A Brighter Future for Nigerian Children

UBEC’s ongoing efforts underscore its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s education landscape.

By reducing the number of out-of-school children and improving infrastructure and teaching quality, the commission is laying the foundation for a brighter future.
