Nigerian Army Confirms Explosion at Barracks in Ogun State

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that an early morning explosion and fire incident at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Thursday, August 14, 2025, has been fully brought under control, with no casualties recorded.

According to a statement released by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele, the explosion occurred inside one of the storage buildings of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Squadron in the early hours of the day.

Swift Response Contained the Fire

Lt. Col. Anele explained that the incident was swiftly managed through a combined effort involving troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment and firefighters from the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to confirm that a minor explosion and subsequent fire outbreak occurred earlier today at Ilese Barracks, Ijebu-Ode,” Anele stated.

“Specifically, in the early hours of today, a localized explosion occurred within one of the storage buildings of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Squadron, leading to a limited fire outbreak.

Swift intervention by troops of the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, working closely with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, ensured that the fire was quickly contained.”

No Loss of Life or Injuries

The Army spokesperson reassured the public that no lives were lost and no injuries were sustained during the incident. Structural damage was limited to the affected storage facility and some stored materials.

“Importantly, no lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained. The structural damage was confined to the affected building and some stored materials,” she confirmed.

Assessment and Investigation Underway

A detailed assessment is currently being conducted to determine the extent of material loss.

The Army has also launched a thorough investigation in collaboration with relevant security and emergency agencies to establish the exact cause of the explosion and prevent future occurrences.

Lt. Col. Anele urged residents of Ilese and surrounding communities to remain calm and go about their normal activities, assuring them that the situation was fully under control.

The Nigerian Army, in collaboration with relevant agencies, has commenced a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the incident and to prevent a recurrence.

Community Safety and Army Preparedness

This incident highlights the readiness of the Nigerian Army to respond promptly to emergencies within its facilities.

The coordinated effort between military engineers and the local fire service ensured that the fire did not spread to other parts of the barracks or surrounding residential areas.

Residents have expressed relief at the swift response and the absence of casualties, while local authorities have commended the joint operation for averting what could have been a more devastating outcome.

The Nigerian Army continues to emphasise its commitment to safety, security, and operational preparedness, noting that incidents such as this are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly to prevent reoccurrence.
