PORTABLE

The popular and often controversial Nigerian artist, Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has announced ambitious plans to further his education.

This decision comes despite the “Zazu” singer already holding an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) from Kwara State Polytechnic.

He now believes acquiring more knowledge is crucial for successfully navigating the complex business aspects of the music industry.

Portable’s decision to return to school is motivated by a deep desire to gain greater control over the financial and legal facets of his music career.

He emphasized that mastering these areas, particularly business deals and royalties, is essential for the future of his enterprise.

Taking Financial Control of Zeh Nation

Portable’s record label, Zeh Nation, is at the heart of his educational ambition. He explained the necessity of returning to the classroom:

“Even though I already have an OND from Kwara State Polytechnic, I still want to further my education so I can understand my music royalties and business deals better, especially for my record label, Zeh Nation.”

By obtaining this advanced knowledge, Portable aims to ensure that his music empire operates with maximum efficiency.

He stressed that he does not want to be entirely dependent on others such as managers, lawyers, or financial advisors for professional guidance and critical decision-making. This move signals a strategic shift toward financial and entrepreneurial autonomy.

The Complexities of Music Royalties

Understanding music royalties is a notoriously complex challenge for artists globally. These payments are generated across various streams:

  • Mechanical Royalties: Paid whenever music is reproduced (e.g., streaming downloads, CDs).
  • Performance Royalties: Paid whenever music is played publicly (e.g., radio, live venues, TV).
  • Synchronization Royalties: Paid when music is licensed for visual media (e.g., films, advertisements).

By studying these intricacies, Portable seeks to ensure that his label, Zeh Nation, correctly registers his works and maximizes revenue collection from all global sources. This proactive approach aims to safeguard the longevity and financial security of his artistic career.

A Growing Trend Among Artists

Portable’s decision reflects a growing recognition within the Afrobeats industry. Artists realize that sustained success requires sharp business acumen to complement creative talent.

The ability to read contracts, negotiate fair deals, and understand global intellectual property laws is now seen as vital protection against exploitation.

His desire to improve his knowledge base speaks to his drive and his background. Having risen from humble beginnings, Portable views education as the ultimate tool for controlling his wealth and artistic output. His commitment is to transforming his fame into a secure, well-managed, long-term business entity.
