Johannesburg

South African media personality Warrick Stock, famously known as DJ Warras, has been shot and killed in central Johannesburg. The brazen daylight attack on Tuesday has left the nation in shock.

According to reports, three suspects ambushed the 40-year-old outside a building in the city center. Police confirmed that one suspect opened fire before the group fled the scene. Consequently, a massive manhunt is currently underway. At this stage, no arrests have been made, and the motive remains unclear.

Targeted Ambush in the City Center

The shooting occurred near Zambesi House, close to the iconic Carlton Centre. At the time of the attack, Stock was supervising security system installations. Reports indicate that unauthorized individuals were occupying the building, which is a common issue in the central business district (CBD).

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Chief Fred Kekana confirmed that authorities have obtained CCTV footage. The footage reportedly shows a man with dreadlocks wearing a security-style uniform.

Key Police Findings

Police have gathered crucial details regarding the incident:

  • Rule Out Robbery: The suspects did not take anything from the victim. As a result, police have ruled out simple robbery.
  • Attempted Escape: Stock attempted to flee the scene but collapsed nearby due to his injuries.
  • Weapon Unused: Although Stock was armed, his firearm remained unused in its holster.

“We know they walked a long distance after the shooting,” Kekana stated. Officers are currently tracking the suspects’ movements through the city.

A Career in Media and Security

Stock was a multifaceted figure. While he was a beloved entertainer, he also operated within the high-risk security sector.

In the entertainment world, he was a renowned DJ and podcaster. He recently hosted the show Ngicel’ iVisa on Mzansi Magic. However, outside of media, he was a businessman. He owned private security and property firms. His work frequently involved VIP protection and complex building evictions.

Family and Nation “Shattered” by Loss

The murder has devastated Stock’s family and his fanbase. His sister, Nicole, expressed her heartbreak following the news.

“I am in shock. I don’t have words. I am shattered,” she said.

Furthermore, she urged the public to stop sharing graphic images of the crime scene on social media. She emphasized that protecting Stock’s three young sons from further trauma is her priority.

Tributes have poured in from across the country. Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie praised Stock for always speaking “without fear or favor.” Additionally, Mzansi Magic described the late star as “charismatic, warm, and sharp-witted.”

South Africa’s Crime Crisis

This high-profile murder underscores the severe crime epidemic facing South Africa. Currently, the country battles one of the highest murder rates in the world.

Recent police statistics reveal a grim reality, with an average of 63 daily killings recorded between April and September. As gang violence and organized crime continue to plague the nation, citizens are demanding urgent action to improve public safety.
