Douala

For the second consecutive day, people in Douala filled the roads in outrage after the official declaration that leader Paul Biya had won yet another election cycle.

Soldiers patrolled multiple neighborhoods to control the escalating situation.

Widespread Disorder

Roadblocks made from debris, burning piles, and gunfire defined the scene across Douala and other urban centers. The fallout from the election outcome brought intense clashes and halted daily life.

Elderly Leader Extends Rule

On Monday, the nation’s highest judicial panel confirmed Biya’s victory, paving the way for him to serve an additional seven years at age 92. He has held the top position continuously since 1982.

Opposition Rejects Outcome

Challenger Issa Tchiroma Bakary immediately disputed the results, fueling public fury. Many citizens viewed the decision as a continuation of entrenched power.

Voices from the Ground

Local resident Max Ndongmo captured the frustration:

“The announcement hit me hard, I nearly smashed my screen. It feels like pure deception. To those in charge, enough is enough.”

Military Presence Intensifies

Authorities sent armed units into various parts of Douala as the afternoon turned destructive. Looting occurred, public property suffered damage, and shots rang out, bringing the metropolis to a standstill.

Broader Unrest

Similar disturbances spread to other locations, reflecting deep dissatisfaction with the prolonged leadership. The deployment aimed to restore order amid rising tensions.

Public Sentiment Boils Over

Residents expressed exhaustion with the status quo, seeing the re-election as dismissive of calls for change. The heavy response underscored the divide between officials and the populace.

City Paralyzed

Businesses closed, traffic vanished, and normal routines ceased as security measures dominated. The violence highlighted underlying grievances long simmering in the community.

Path Ahead Uncertain

With forces maintaining control, questions linger about resolving the unrest. The extended mandate has ignited debates over governance and future direction.
