BATURE

Nigeria’s commercial landscape is in mourning following the passing of Dr. Bature Abdulaziz, a towering figure in the nation’s trading sector and a respected community leader. His death, confirmed over the weekend by his son, Ismail Abdulaziz, marks a significant loss for the Kano business community and the country at large.

President Bola Tinubu led the tributes on Monday, January 19, 2026. In an official statement, the President described Abdulaziz’s death as a vacuum that will be felt across the Nigerian federation due to his immense influence on national commerce.

A Titan of Nigerian Commerce

Dr. Abdulaziz was much more than a businessman; he was a fierce advocate for traders’ rights and economic empowerment. He rose to prominence through his leadership at the Kantin Kwari Market, eventually ascending to the position of National President of the Harmonised Traders Association of Nigeria.

Throughout his career, he focused on:

  • Trader Welfare: Championing the rights and security of small and large-scale merchants.
  • Economic Growth: Facilitating business development initiatives that bridged regional divides.
  • Union Leadership: Bringing various commerce-related unions together to create a unified voice for Nigerian traders.

A Champion for National Peace

Beyond the marketplace, Bature Abdulaziz was a dedicated patriot. He founded the Patriotic Elders Network for Peace (PENP), an organization committed to national security and political advocacy.

President Tinubu specifically acknowledged the support he received from the late icon during the 2023 election cycle. He praised Abdulaziz for his persistent focus on national unity, noting that his advocacy for peace remained unwavering throughout his life.

Final Condolences to Kano State

The President extended his deepest sympathies to the government and people of Kano State, as well as the broader business community. He urged them to find solace in the lasting impact Abdulaziz made on Nigerian society.

As the Harmonised Traders Union of Nigeria reflects on his leadership, the consensus remains clear: Dr. Bature Abdulaziz leaves behind a legacy of integrity, commercial excellence, and a deep-seated love for his country.
